Free Online Personal Credit Report (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion)

In this day of excessive consumer spending and high debt balances, people seem to be unaware of the value of a good credit report. Not only do these reports show current and past credit card and loan accounts, they also provide details about court records, debt payment history and any adverse actions taken due to failure to pay bills in a timely manner. Although the importance of in these details is underestimated, there is a treasure lesser known to many people: free credit reports.

Free reports can be obtained from many sources with different price tags. This report was implemented as a result of the sharp increase in identity theft. The only online source that offers absolutely free reports is annualcreditreport.com. Personal credit reports can be online, by phone and mail. Online credit reports can be accessed at anytime. Results from all three credit reporting agencies – Experian, Equifax and TransUnion – can be obtained with just one request.

Experian, Equifax and TransUnion credit reports offer consumers reports online from their respective websites. Both Experian and TransUnion offer reports with strings attached; Equifax does not offer no cost credit reports. Generally, a 30-day trial membership and/or a consumer's credit score is offered for a free report.

An Experian credit report with a trial period of Triple Advantage credit monitoring service is offered for free. After the 30 days, the monitoring service increases to $12.95 per month if not canceled. A free Experian report with monitoring service can be found on their website as well as consumerinfo.com. The cost for continuing monitoring service at both sites is $12.95. Credit Check Monitoring is the service offered at consumer.com; Triple Advantage is the service at freecreditreport.com.

The TransUnion offer mirrors Experian's offer, however, the TransUnion Credit Monitoring service increases to $9.99 per month for ongoing service. There is no obvious offer on the Equifax website. The cost of Equifax credit reports range from $10 for a single report to $15.95 for a report with a FICO credit score.

As seen by credit report offers, not all costs are created equal. Consumers can obtain free online credit reports from all three credit bureaus at annualcreditreport.com. These reports can be requested from TransUnion and Equifax with trial memberships. Whether a credit report is free or has a fee, the information it contains is invaluable.
