Free Screen Savers

Computer users who are bored with their existing screen savers can always download new screen savers from the Internet. However, a smart computer user will pick and choose exactly where they get their free screen savers downloaded from. The reason for being so picky is because of hidden programs that come with downloaded free screen saver programs. Hidden programs such as adware, spyware, viruses, and Trojans harm your computer or steal information.

A cautionary article appeared in the Consumer Alert section of the American Association of Retired Persons' Online Bulletin. Internet privacy was the main issue when discussing downloading free programs like games, music, or screen savers. Spyware can steal information and transmit that information to someone through the Internet connection. The AARP suggests that computer users refrain from downloading unfamiliar programs, not opening email attachments from strangers and placing a freeze on both your credit report and credit score. The frozen credit report can be opened with a password or PIN that thieves don't know.

The same rule applied in an article posted on XNews.ro. A regular computer user downloads what they think is a free screen saver, emoticon, or another free utility from a website, but the program is a Trojan horse that steals the user's personal information. If a person did download a Trojan-filled program, XNews recommends restoring the computer to its original configuration to a date before the infection or running a spyware removal program to try to locate and remove the spyware program. If all else fails, backup all of your files on the hard drive and reformat it, then reinstall your operating system and other programs.

Preventative measures include not installing any programs from unknown sources, just as the AARP advised. Also keeping the anti-virus software up to date is another method in controlling computer attacks.

One site on the Internet that is advisable to avoid is JoBlo.com. Aside from being a fan-based entertainment site talking about movies, DVDs, etc., JoBlo offers movie and celebrity screen savers to download. With an extensive list of screen savers in both categories, visitors are surely tempted to download free screen savers that catch their eye. However, JoBlo makes no mention of Adware, Spyware, Trojans, or any other Malware that may infect a user's computer. Therefore, downloader beware!

One screen saver site that users should not be afraid to visit is Freesaver.com. Freesaver posts a message on their home page saying, "Freesaver.com is the original truly free screensaver site on the Net: no shareware, no nags, only freeware. Browse and choose from over 1600 free Windows screensavers organized in 16 categories, or use our search engine to locate a specific screen saver. All listed screen savers have been scanned for adware, spyware and viruses." With 100 screensavers per category, users can browse worry-free and find a new screensaver that interests them.

With knowledge and patience combined with some leisure time, free screen savers can be downloaded, installed, and enjoyed by computer users everywhere.
