Free Software

Where on the Internet can someone get a physical copy of a software program for free, not a free download? Though searching through the Internet takes time and multiple keywords to try, there are at least three websites where computer users can get free software on CD-ROM.

The first site is the popular VideoProfessor.com. On the site, users are greeted by Founder and CEO John W. Scherer. Scherer, whose "As seen on TV" products allow users to learn one chapter of a computer software program for free, offers lessons in popular Microsoft programs such as Excel, Photoshop, Access, and FrontPage. If you keep the free CD-ROM, users are required to pay $79.95 for a complete set of software. If not, users can return the discs and be paid $10.00 as compensation.

The second site, MyFreeSoftware.com, offers free copies of educational and entertainment software programs for free. Customers only need to pay for "shipping, processing and promotion charges." Some of the titles include "Show me how to use..." educational packages for Excel, Windows, and The Web, to game programs like Mahjongg, Golden Tee, Ecco the Dolphin, NHL 2002, and All Star Baseball 2002. They also offer programs for Macintosh PCs and CD bundles. Myfreesoftware accepts major credit cards as well as PayPal.

The last site, FreeCDSoftware.com, works the same as MyFreeSoftware. Customers can choose educational or entertainment programs for free. They are only required to pay for shipping and delivery costs which are $7.50 per item. Some of the choices offered by FreeCDSoftware include Spider-Man 2: The Game, Webster's Millennium 2005 Encyclopedia, Passion for the Bible, Kid's Spanish, and a choice of Dora the Explorer programs. Aside from CD-ROM programs, FreeCDSoftware also provides software for Macintosh computers, ink refills, DVDs and a choice of software bundle packages.

In my opinion, it seems a bit ridiculous to pay $80.00 to learn how to use a Microsoft program like Excel or FrontPage. "Office and Windows Training Pro," a Microsoft tutorial program can be bought at Best Buy for $39.99. This is half the cost of the Video Professor software, plus it teaches a wide range of Microsoft and Adobe programs as well as Java and HTML languages. This is better compared to Video Professor's one program software for twice the price. I also find the deals at MyFreeSoftware.com and FreeCDSoftware.com to be a lot more reasonable when purchasing other software programs for the home computer.
