So you want to create your own website or more importantly, you want to create one for free. There are many websites on the Internet that offer free web hosting for your website. Some are better known than others. Here are a few websites that offer free webspace.

Freewebspace.com is a web hosting search engine for those looking to build their own site. There, users can search for free hosts in a specific language and megabyte requirement. They can also search for paid web hosting as well as free hosting.
The second site, Wetpaint, offers the ability for users to create their own free website in three easy steps. The first step is giving your site a name, a web address, and keyword search terms. There is also the question of who has editing rights for the website. Choices range from "everyone, even anonymously," "anyone who has an account," to "only people I invite." The second part is choosing the design style of the website, the look of the page itself. This includes the text, colors, and pictures. Those with editing rights can change the look of the site later on. The last step of three is setting up the user's account. This includes a username and password, email address, first and last name and verification that they're over the age of 13 years old.

The last free webspace providers are subsidiaries of major Internet Service Providers. Both Angelfire and Tripod are owned by Lycos while Geocities is owned by SBC/ Yahoo! Angelfire offers free webspace with 20 megabytes of space, site building and file management tools, and blog and photo album space. For a cost of $4.95 per month or more, users can get added space on their site and a domain name. These premium plans come without banner ads and range from the Neon plan ($4.95) to the Krypton plan ($14.95).

Tripod is the other Lycos owned site that offers free webspace. Like Angelfire, Tripod offers free hosting with 20 megabytes of space, and blog and photo album options, plus the site building and file management tools. For a starting subscription of $4.95, users can get extra features. These include added disc space, domain name and removal of banner ads. Paid plans range from the $4.95 Tripod Plus, Tripod Pro for $8.95, Webmaster at $11.95, and the Deluxe priced at $19.95. All four pay plans include a set-up fee from $10.00 to $15.00. This option might be a good idea for small business owners or people who are serious about web development. The free plan might be a good idea for leisure time web users, or kids who want to keep in touch with friends and family as well as giving them a creative outlet.

The last free webspace site, GeoCities, is owned by SBC/ Yahoo! Existing Yahoo! subscribers can sign in to GeoCities for an even faster account set up. Like the previous Lycos web hosting sites, GeoCities offers free and paid options. Pay plans range from $4.95 to $11.95, with start up fees from $10.00 to $25.00. The free plan includes a blog, a free website, web building tools, and says "No technical knowledge required" to build your own site. The $4.95 plan offers 500 megabytes of disc space and is free of ads. The $8.95 plan offers no ads, a free domain name, a custom email address, and two
gigabytes of space. The last plan is $11.95 and comes with five gigabytes of space, enhanced tools and free 24-hour technical support.

In all, there are many choices to get truly free webspace, plus choices to add on to your website for a low cost. If you're thinking about creating your own website for fun or for your small business, take a look at Angelfire, Geocities, Tripod, Wetpaint, or search through freewebspace.net.
